MARKET NEWS

SoftBank Group, led by CEO Masayoshi Son, has announced plans to invest at least $100 billion in U.S. projects over the next four years, focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. This initiative aims to create approximately 100,000 jobs, with the investment expected to be completed before President-elect Donald Trump's term ends in 2029. The announcement was made jointly by Son and Trump at Mar-a-Lago, highlighting a significant commitment to bolstering the U.S. tech industry.

Hedge Funds Increase Bullish Bets on Gasoline Amid Supply Concerns
Hedge funds are becoming more optimistic about gasoline prices, increasing their bullish positions as they anticipate tighter supplies in the coming months. This shift in sentiment reflects concerns over potential supply constraints, which could drive prices higher. The increased bullishness indicates that investors are positioning themselves to benefit from expected price increases due to these supply issues.

Wall Street Anticipates Rate Cuts to Encourage Clients to Move Away from Cash
Wall Street executives are optimistic that anticipated Federal Reserve rate cuts will prompt clients to move away from cash holdings, which have remained resilient despite declining interest rates in 2024. Despite the Fed's rate cuts this year, cash in money markets surged by $824 billion. Investors earning around 4% on cash, much higher than near-zero returns from a few years ago, face the opportunity cost of missing potential gains in the S&P 500 and other indices. Futures tied to the Fed funds rate suggest substantial rate cuts by December 2025, with some believing this will prompt a shift from cash to stocks or longer-duration bonds. While inflation progress has stagnated, keeping interest rates relatively high, many see potential in higher-earning investments over cash holdings.

LAST WEEK TECHNICAL QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWER:
Correct Answer: B, TEV / EBITDA multiples do not account for capital expenditures — What’s one problem with using TEV / EBITDA multiples to calculate Terminal Value?
Explanation: Using TEV/EBITDA multiples to calculate Terminal Value has a significant limitation: it does not account for capital expenditures (CapEx). EBITDA, while a useful measure of operating performance, excludes expenses required to maintain or grow the company’s asset base, such as investments in property, equipment, or infrastructure. This can lead to an overestimation of value, as CapEx is a real cash outflow that affects long-term sustainability and growth. By ignoring these expenditures, TEV/EBITDA may overstate the company’s true value, particularly in capital-intensive industries where significant ongoing investment is necessary to sustain operations and competitive positioning.
