McDonald’s Reports First Global Sales Drop Since 2020 

McDonald’s has reported a 1% decline in global comparable sales for the second quarter of 2024, marking its first drop since 2020. The decrease was attributed to inflation-weary consumers opting for cheaper alternatives or eating at home. Sales fell by 0.7% in the U.S. and 1.1% in international markets, with significant impacts seen in France and the Middle East due to political tensions. Despite the decrease, McDonald’s continues to push value initiatives like $5 meal deals to attract customers. The company's net income also fell 12.5% to $2.02 billion. (Reuters)

BHP and Lundin Mining to Jointly Acquire Filo for $2.96 Billion 

NEW YORK, July 29 (WSJ) - BHP Group and Lundin Mining have agreed to jointly acquire Canadian mining company Filo for $2.96 billion. This strategic acquisition aims to combine Filo's extensive copper and nickel resources with Lundin's operational expertise, enhancing their presence in the South American mining sector. The deal will involve shared infrastructure and investment in developing the Filo del Sol project, which spans the Chile-Argentina border. This acquisition is expected to bolster both companies' portfolios in the critical copper market, vital for the global transition to renewable energy. (WSJ)
